July 9 – 13, 2022: Blacksmithing: Build a Power Hammer

Due to overwhelming interest in this class, we are scheduling it twice! This class is the first offering, immediately followed by the second held July 16 – 20.  We are hosting Allan Kress, Clay Spencer’s protege who will lead a group through the building of power hammers. These hammers are rated between 60 and 70 pound ram weight.

Students can expect to work on their skills of fabrication from plans to accurate dimensions, design and engineering, and team building.

Students will build the power hammers as a group effort, and each student will take one hammer home. You will need to bring a truck or trailer to take your hammer home at the end of class.

The class will be held in early July – it should be warm in the shop. Class hours will be 8 to 5 each day. We may go later if needed. There will be goals to achieve each day and we will go longer if those goals are incomplete.

Tuition is $2750 and includes materials, fuel, and standard safety equipment. We have plenty of tools at the school, but if you have a favorite hand hammer welding helmet or other tool, please bring it along. You will leave with what you make and the remainder of the materials prescribed for the project.
