Collaborative Sculpture class with Fred Crist
Sept. 30 – Oct. 5th, 2023, 8 AM to 5 PM
Class Cost $636 with booking fees
In this class, students will collaborate on building a sculpture to Fred Crist’s design, a unique opportunity to delve into the sculptural process of design and execution. Learning to create form through forging, texture, and layering will be key techniques used in the class. Abstract parts will be made and assembled to create a unified figurative relief. Students will learn the process of design, creating individual pieces which will fit together in a traditional manner to become a completed work. Students will work individually and in teams to create the various elements of the piece, then will work together as a class for the final fit and assembly. Some experience in blacksmithing is beneficial, but not required. This is an all-levels class.
Fred Crist has been practicing artistic blacksmithing since 1975, and worked in the Samuel Yellin shop in Philadelphia for 11 years, before moving to Virginia to establish a studio in Waynesboro. His work is showcased in the National Cathedral in D.C., the University of Pittsburgh, PA, and many private collections throughout the country. He is also renowned for his photography and painting.
