Friday Night Open Shop Available to anyone who has completed a beginners course, the shop is open from 6pm to 9pm to practice or work on personal projects for a fee of $25. There may be a materials fee depending on the project. Projects cannot be stored at the studio.

Intro to Blacksmithing, weekend course

A beginning level course that introduces the student to safe shop practices, fire management, efficient hammer techniques, and basic forging. Techniques learned will be drawing down, cutting, upsetting and twisting. Discussion of iron metallurgy and it’s practical application in the forge as well as introduction to some power tools is part of the curriculum. Projects will include a hook, candle stick and forge poker. Class starts at 9 AM and runs to 4 PM both Saturday and Sunday. Lunch is provided. Please advise of any dietary restrictions.

Intro to Blacksmithing, month course

This class is designed to resemble a continuing education schedule. There will be eight classes of three hours each, two classes a week. In addition to the curriculum of the weekend course, students can expect to learn the techniques of riveting, collaring, mortice and tenon joints, and an intro to forge welding. Additional projects will include a trivet and a wall mounted coat rack or pot rack.

Intermediate Blacksmithing, weekend course

$180

This class assumes some basic knowledge of blacksmith shop and techniques. Additional techniques added to the students base knowledge will be riveting, building to a scale drawing, vise bending techniques, and practical approach to assembly. Some power hammer work will be a part of the class. A small wall mounted pot rack will be the project for this course. Class starts at 9 AM and runs to 4 PM both Saturday and Sunday. Lunch is provided. Please advise of any dietary restrictions.

Intermediate Blacksmithing, month course

Designed on the same schedule as the beginning month long class, this course offers the same curriculum as the intermediate weekend course with the addition of a quatrefoil pattern designed by the student based in traditional techniques. This is an introduction to architectural blacksmithing.

Fire Screen Project, month course

Students who have had at least the beginning course can enroll in a project course to build a piece that they want or need for their own use. In this course, the student will design and build a fire screen to fit their home fireplace. Learning to take accurate measurements and make a functional template will be emphasized. Students will be coached on their design elements by the instructor based on that students previous experience and accomplishments.

Pot Rack Project, month course

$360

Students who have had at least the beginning course can enroll in a project course to build a pot rack to fit the needs of their home kitchen. Planning and accurate measurements for mounting to the house sub structure will be a focal point of this course. Design is left to the students with coaching by the instructor.
